STIRPAT: A Research Study in Structural Human Ecology
STIRPAT is an acronym that refers to a statistical model for assessing environmental impacts at virtually any scale and to a research program in structural human ecology (SHE). Any human ecosystem comprises four key, interacting components: population, environment, social organization, and technology. The STIRPAT model can be used to explore the interactions between these components, in the search for understanding about the creation of and solution to environmental problems.
Center for Research on Environmental Decisions
The research focus of the CRED is environmental decision making processes, especially those that arise in the course of adaptation to climate variability and mitigation of or adaptation to global climate change. CRED will use research results to design and to evaluate possible decision aids, including tools that facilitate use of scientific information about the natural and social environment and tools that may lead to better group decisions. Other project goals include educational aids to improve undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate studies, outreach in the form of training or information-sharing with individuals and group leaders, and synergistic, integrated research findings.
SEED Magazine: The Last Experiment
The Last Experiment in SEED Magazine is an excellent overview of the role Social Science might play in motivating us to do something about Climate Change.
Stonehouse member Anthony Leiserowitz points out that the human decision-making processes required to do something about climate change are at least as complicated as the technical challenge of reducing GHG emissions. This is a great read, I hope you enjoy.
