Time to ruggedize? Words of Wisdom & Insight from Grist and Cara Pike
"Time to ruggedize: We should talk more about preparing for climate change" is the title of a recent Grist article (www.grist.org) by David Roberts who found both inspiration and hope in a presentation by Cara Pike of the Social Capital Project.
In the article, directly influenced by Cara Pike's research and publication "Communicating about Climate Adaptation & Preparation", David says that "You don't need to know exactly which impacts are attributable to climate change to start talking about ruggedizing.." and that if we use the term 'ruggedizing' this will get more people engaged, because:
- ruggedizing is inherently urgent
- ruggedizing can by-pass climate politics
- ruggedizing builds social capital, and,
- ruggedizing often involves carbon pollution reduction!
"This interesting blog piece from Grist is helping to kickstart the conversation on how to communicate climate impacts and the need to prepare for them. Preliminary evidence is emerging that shows a focus on preparing for climate impacts may increase support for mitigation efforts." Cara Pike, Stonehouse Standing Circle Senior Advisor, and Director of the Social Capital Project.
