John Mashey on 'The Machinery of Climate Anti-Science'
Dr. John Mashey is a computer scientist who recently got involved in studying climate science and anti-science and has and also published reports on DeSmogBlog.
On April 7, 2011, he delivered a lecture entitled ‘The Machinery of Climate Anti-Science’ at the University of British Columbia as part of the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions’ Seminar Series, where he exposed some of the main elements and strategies of the climate deniers to deter climate policy and action.
Even though the science is clear enough, appropriate policy responses have not followed, in part due to “anti-science’s” intention to obscure and confuse the science in order to avoid unwanted policies.
Dr. Mashey’s presentation discusses:
• the machinery that lies behind the confusion around climate change
• the social networks behind climate anti-science
• the demographic and political breakdown of climate change deniers
• the links and parallels with the tobacco industry
• the complex money laundering patterns, main funders and the concentration of players
• the purposefully messy and complicated linkages in the ‘machine’
• the reasons for anti-science, which are manifold and extend beyond money
• and much more…
He reveals compelling and detailed examples of plagiarism, disinformation and lawsuits and calls for action on the part of journalism, public relations, lawyers, governments and policymakers to ‘defog the machine and throw rocks in the gears’.
