The goal of contributing to positive social change in the direction of increased sustainability usually takes two forms: policy analysis to aid decision-makers, and informative or educational programs aimed at the public and consumer behaviour. These tactics are popular, but it is not clear that they are likely to lead to transformative change. Viable alternatives are being explored through new tactics of creating institutional change, social mobilization, and economic incentive for sustainable practices.
